A peaceful, relaxing retreat in Beachwood

Walk into AJ Spa Millennium in Beachwood and the warm glow you receive from the staff's gracious greeting and reception will mirror the way you feel after you experience an array of their outstanding spa services.

"Our goal is for each of our guests to experience peace and happiness every time they enter our spa," says Marnita Sandifer who along with her partner, AJ Othman, owns and operates the spa. "Whether a guest comes here for a stone massage, manicure, pedicure, facial, specialty mask, waxing, Magic Tan (a UV free spray tan) or designer peel, we do our best to make sure they get the VIP treatment they deserve."

Sandifer knew from the beginning that she wanted to own a spa and invent her own line of skin-care products using her background in chemistry.

After getting her nail technician's license, she took more classes to become certified as an esthetician to perform facials and other skin-care services.

For two years, she worked two part-time jobs - doing manicures at Mario's in Beachwood and giving facials at Sundance Studios in Brunswick. All the while, she was building a loyal client base. She and Othman began saving up money they would need to open a spa; Sandifer also continued to research and develop her own skin-care line, testing the products on Othman.

In December 2003, she and Othman unveiled the result of years of planning - AJ's Millennium Spa, a 4,800-square-foot space dedicated to "an experience of peace and happiness," as their tag line reads.

Marnita Sandifer surprised everyone when she received a Ph. D. in chemistry from Case Western Reserve University.
According to her, no one she knew thought she'd do anything with her life.  After all, Sandifer, 43, graduated Collinwood High School in the lower 22 percent of her class, which she attributes to a lack of motivation.
"I just did not like school," she told a group of high school girls at Ursuline College's 14th annual Women in Math & Science Day.
But like many adolescents, her ideas of "making it big" - in her case, as a model - fizzled into a frightening reality when she was hired as a factory assembly worker at General Electric.

Marnita Sandifer doesn't mince words about what it takes to be successful.
"There are a lot of sacrifices you need to make," Sandifer told a group of sophomore and junior girls recently at the Ursuline College Women in Math and Science Day.  The title of her talk was, "Deferred gratification: It is important for long-term success."
Co-owner of AJ's Millennium Spa in Beachwood, with a doctorate in chemistry and her own line of skin-care products, Sandifer has come a long way from when she graduated near the bottom of her class in 1980 from Collinwood High School.
